HISTORICAL
CENTRE
From
a military point of view, the city was an important bastion.
The Guadalevìn Gorge in the Tagus River protected
it to the west and northwest, while a double thick city
wall built by the Arabs defended it to the south and southeast.
Inside
its walls the city is a living history. From its Arabic
origins it grew into a place of regal houses, religious
buildings and palaces that depict the passing of the centuries.
The majority of the city's monuments, museums and commercial
centres are concentrated in the centre.
